Shopping for the Right Auto Insurance
Perhaps you are a new vehicle owner, or perhaps you are just fed up with your current auto insurance policy. Whatever the case may be, here is a step-by-step process to finding the auto insurance company that is just right for you.
1. First, figure out what you need.
Start out by making sure exactly how much coverage is required. Different states vary in their insurance standards, so check your state requirements. It is advisable to begin with liability insurance, and think about if you will need collision and comprehensive insurance, medical payments and personal injury protection insurance.
2. Then, figure out what you have.
Survey your own financial situation, and how much you can and are willing to spend on auto insurance in accordance with state requirements. Take note that the auto insurance company with the lowest price does not necessarily have the best value for your money, so avoid making a decision based only on cost.
3. Look into recommendations and ratings.
It is usually best to use what is tried and true. Inquire at your local body shop, because they are constantly in contact with insurance adjusters. You may also ask auto dealers, and even friends who seem to be satisfied with their insurance company. Check the ratings as well- J.D. Power Ratings, Standard & Poor, and A.M. Best all publish ratings for auto insurance companies nationwide.
4. Check out customer complaints.
On the opposite side of the coin, compare the client complaint ratio of different auto insurance companies and spot general trends. You can usually find this on the insurance department website of the state you live in. If this is too much of a hassle for you, you might find it easier to search for client surveys instead, to give yourself a general glimpse.
5. Compare the auto insurance policy terms.
Important things to take note of are the deductibles, limits for liability in the event that damages are incurred, the nature and quality of customer service, discounts, and other benefits and components that are personally relevant for you. Be aware that some auto insurance companies call the same features by different names.
6. If not certain, contact an agent.
Auto insurance agents are available to assist you with making this decision. There are captive agents, who represent a particular insurance company, but if you are geared toward an objective choice, find a broker or an independent agent. Naturally, a fee will be charged, but it is often subject to negotiation.
7. Fill out the application forms accurately.
Take the time to review the policy for unwanted clauses and to take down notes before beginning an application. Make sure that all the information you provide is specific and correct. The slightest error might make a significant difference, so focus, use the right terms, especially regarding your occupation. If there are entries that are difficult to understand, it is better to ask questions than to guess. Proofread the application form afterward, or better yet, ask somebody else to do so.
8. Terminate your old policy.
Make sure that if you have a currently existing auto insurance policy, you cancel it after you have signed up for the new one, or they will continue charging you for it.
